Topic: Preparing for Plein Air Events
Our July guest host is Bob Upton, a well-known and well-loved plein air painter, and he’ll be sharing about his experiences around the country in many different plein air competitions. Bob will talk about being juried into events, travel and food costs, guest housing, getting inspired, scouting locations, competition painting selection, doing demos, meeting other artists… and he’ll have lots of images to share and helpful ideas for how to navigate a Plein Air Event.
In addition to painting, Bob has been an award winning graphic designer for 30 years. Along with his education in design, he studied drawing and painting in the academic style of Classical Realism. His training was on the figure, portraiture and still life. He has also studied landscape outdoors, and now travels all over the country to paint a wide variety of locations and weather conditions. He has a love of realism, rooted in traditional oil painting. Formal academic training in drawing and painting, combined with the outdoor palette of the French Impressionists, has been the foundation of his education, and to “catch the day” in paint has been his goal.
