Landscape paintings of Canada: A survey of Group of Seven plein air works
Hop online for another insightful First Monday Shop Talk!
Our October guest host is artist and OPM Board Member Matt Kania. On a recent trip to Ontario, Matt visited the National Gallery in Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto. He has also taken previous trips to the McMichael Museum of Canadian Art near Toronto. The focus of his journeys were to see in person the many plein air paintings by the early twentieth century Canadian artists known as the Group of Seven, and their preceeding inspiration, Tom Thomson.
Matt will share photos from his visits and his thoughts on the authenticity of their canvases in the landscapes that Matt knows well from previous wilderness travels in the places they painted. Portrayals of Group of Seven paintings in books or online often feature many of their larger flamboyant or stylized works. But, it is the plein air works… less often seen… that are the workhorse heroes of their jaunts into the wilds of Canada.
