TOPIC: The History of Plein Air Painting in Minnesota

Our October guest host is Minnesota artist Jack Dant, who brings a wealth of insight into the historical context and record of plein air painting in our state. He originally developed this research and presentation for the Twin Cities Bungalow Club, and we’re excited and honored to learn from him about the thing we’re all passionate about and our shared artistic roots.
For Jack, painting has been a fascinating process of learning, unlearning, exploring, and expanding his ability to observe the world. Through Jeff Hurinenko’s instruction in Flemish still life and portraiture, he learned lessons in value, subtle warm and cool colors, and the importance of accuracy in drawing. Then, training with Joe Paquet, he was challenged to observe the world deeply and create paintings that reflect the moment being observed through an intricate weaving of intuition and a solid education in the prismatic palette. He received insightful watercolor instruction from Andy Evansen, and dove into the world of etching through Stuart Loughridge.
